At Perham-Dent Public Schools we believe that all children benefit from being involved in at least one co-curricular activity. We believe in order to best meet that goal we need to offer a wide variety of programs that tap into each student’s talents and interests. We have 34 programs for students to participate in; included are activities in the area of fine arts, athletics and academics. Over 70% of our high school students are involved in one or more co-curricular activities. While each program has varying degrees of success, we strive to provide the coaching and facilities to allow individuals the tools to be the best they can be. We also recognize that many students participate in order to feel a part of something special…to “wear the uniform” so to speak. As a Department, we couldn’t be more pleased to meet the needs of all students who choose to be a member of the team.
We further believe that Perham-Dent is small enough so that every student can make the team and, if determined, can make history. Fine Arts- Few schools offer “across the board” quality in the area of fine arts. Because of the "building block mentality" we take, our students are exposed to fine instruction from an early age. How many schools offer one act play, stringed orchestra, band, stage musicals, and choir to students in the 5th grade? Add speech, marching and pep band and you have numerous creative venues for your child. We are fortunate to have facilities to support these programs. With large group and individual practice space in each of the four buildings in the district, our students are able to hone their skills. Our high school auditorium is a state of the art facility with computerized lighting and sound qualities that allows these same children to share their talents with the community.
Academics- In the area of academic co-curricular, our students excel at a regional (student government), state (Mock Trial), national (FFA), and international (Science Research) level. Too often, students with a desire and ability to excel mentally are limited to classroom experiences…we want our students to “match wits” with the brightest minds in the nation.
Athletics- At PHS we offer a full slate of team and individual sports. Our head coaches average 10 years of experience in the coaching field and are encouraged to build their programs from the bottom up, thus leading to numerous opportunities for the youth of our community. While we are proud of our teams and athletes, we are equally pleased with the number of students allowed to participate. Our programs benefit from quality facilities; few schools have access to two quality baseball fields (one was the site of the 1995 state amateur tournament), a 36 hole championship golf course, a lighted 8 court tennis facility, access to the Perham Area Community Center, which includes weight rooms, field house, a new $300,000.00 circuit training room, pool, racket ball courts, etc. Our track is all-weather, and the football field is considered one of the finest surfaces in northern Minnesota.
Each child comes to our programs with a need and a dream…we do our best to fulfill both.
